Life-long Learners WANTED

There are times when students like to complete an assignment and push it aside, only to find it relevant when studying for a test. I can understand this. I used to be one who learned what I had to just because my goal was to get a good grade. I did not consider the material I learned in school useful in everyday life. I would like my students to become life-long learners. I would like them to see the connection between the learning content and themselves.
You, as the parent, can help to alleviate this concern of learning strictly for the test. With your assistance in the genetics activity, your children may find the information intriguing. By working together, you can take the activity a step further by going beyond answering the assigned questions.
My hope is that learning goes beyond my stated class objectives, and my students ask more questions.

Searching for answers

Your children have been introduced to the topic of genetics in the classroom. They could use your help to reinforce the learning concepts.
The children have been learning how to define genetics. They are in the midst of answering the questions how does heredity relate to genetics, and why do children look like their parents. I give you an excellent source of information provided by KidsHealth for parents. This will offer you a brief introduction to the topic of genetics.
One activity in that students are required to participate is examining facial features of their parents and themselves. They will create a chart labeled with eyes, ears, nose, mouth, chin, cheeks, and hairline. They will describe each feature of each parent as well as themselves in that chart. What features did you pass down to your child? Students will identify what facial features they have inherited. This is a fun activity for you to get involved with your child. Enjoy it! Please make sure your child brings at least one family picture that would help display the inherited genes. I cannot wait to see the results! The chart along with one-three pictures is due at the end of the week.

Welcome.

It is the middle of the school year, yet there is no better time than now for students to log into my weblog for help with learning the material within the year. My blog will provide hyperlinks to websites that will reinforce learned concepts. Anythink we have learned or will be learning will be available to view via The Interactive Hub, the new and convenient source of student information. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate on a future project later on in the school year.

Using blogs allow students to work together in an untraditional way. They can document and share information with eachother. Not only can students collaborate with one another but with students in different locations, across states and countries. That is a unit to look forward to. I hope you will be looking forward to the exciting change in education with technology.
